What Are Exclusive Weapons?

An Exclusive Weapon (EW) is a hero-specific weapon that transforms a hero's kit. Each EW belongs to one specific hero (e.g. Murphy's Mitigation Master, DVA's Energy Master, Tesla's Inductive Current). Equipping and upgrading the EW:

  • Boosts the hero's base stats (Attack, HP, Defence)
  • Unlocks new skills at specific level milestones
  • Strengthens the hero's existing skills
  • Often introduces new mechanics that change how the hero's squad operates
EWs Are the Skill-Tier Difference Between Heroes

An Exclusive Weapon is the single biggest power transformation a hero gets. A 5★ DVA without her Exclusive Weapon hits hard. A 5★ DVA with Energy Master at Level 20 redefines the squad. The same is true for every other EW-eligible hero. If you have a 5★ hero in your main squad and they have an EW available, getting that EW to Level 20 should be one of your top investments.

The 30 Levels and Skill Unlocks

Exclusive Weapons have 30 levels. Special skills unlock at four milestones:

LevelWhat Unlocks
Level 1 (initial unlock)First skill effect — usually a baseline stat buff and the EW's signature mechanic
Level 10Second skill milestone — significant scaling improvement
Level 20Third skill milestone — including a 7.5% damage/effect boost. This is the meta sweet spot
Level 30Final skill — the maximum upgrade with the strongest mechanic

Levels between milestones provide stat increases and incremental skill scaling, but the milestone levels (1/10/20/30) are where the kit-defining skills unlock.

Shard Cost Per Level Bracket

Pushing the weapon level requires named EW shards (specific to that weapon) and/or Universal EW shards (any weapon):

Level RangeShard Cost
Initial unlock (Level 1)50 named shards (5★ hero required)
Level 1 → Level 201,080 additional shards (1,130 cumulative including unlock)
Level 20 → Level 301,750 additional shards
Level 1 → Level 30 total~2,880 shards

The cost curve is steeply back-loaded — most of the shard cost is in the Level 20 → 30 push. Levels 1-20 take about 40% of total cost; Levels 20-30 take 60%.

The Level 20 Sweet Spot

Community consensus across all serious guides: Level 20 is the right initial target, not Level 30.

Why Level 20 Specifically

  • The 7.5% boost unlocks at Level 20 — significant power gain that compounds across every fight
  • It's the Hero Awakening prerequisite — see the Hero Awakening Guide. You cannot Awaken Kimberly, DVA, or Tesla without their EW at Level 20+ first
  • Diminishing returns above Level 20 — going to 30 takes 1,750 more shards for incremental gains; that same shard pool covers most of a second hero's path to Level 20
  • Spreading horizontally beats stacking vertically — five heroes at Level 20 outperform one hero at Level 30 in 90% of practical squad situations

When to Push Past Level 20

Only push a single EW past Level 20 when:

  • You are a heavy spender with the resources to do so without delaying other heroes
  • The hero is your absolute primary carry and you have already brought your supporting heroes to Level 20
  • Your alliance is in late-late-game cross-server PvP where every percentage point matters

For everyone else: Level 20 your main hero, then start the Level 1 → 20 push on the next hero, and so on.

Release Schedule Per Season

Each season (Season 1 through Season 5) released three new Exclusive Weapons — one per troop type, on the Week 1 / Week 3 / Week 6 schedule:

WeekType
Week 1Tank EW released
Week 3Aircraft EW released
Week 6Missile EW released

This is the same release cadence Season 6's Hero Awakenings now follow — because Awakening replaces EWs as the season's hero progression mechanic.

Season 6 Note: No New EWs

Season 6 does not introduce new Exclusive Weapons. Awakening takes that slot. However:

  • Existing EWs from Seasons 1-5 still apply and matter
  • Awakening requires the hero's existing EW at Level 20+ as a prerequisite
  • So Season 6 is a great time to push existing EWs to Level 20+ if they aren't there yet

Where Shards Come From

SourceHow It Works
Battle Pass per EW (paid)Each EW has its own Battle Pass. Around $20, includes enough named shards to unlock the EW early plus push to Level 2 — accelerates by several weeks
Black Market (between seasons)Offers EW Shard Choice Boxes that can be applied to any EW. Prioritising these boxes is the F2P route to all 3 of a season's EWs eventually
Hot Deal eventsLimited-time packs sometimes contain EW shards (named or Universal). See the Hot Deals Guide
Limited eventsSeason events occasionally include EW shards as rewards
Honor Shop / Alliance ShopPeriodically offers EW materials at high prices

The realistic F2P path: prioritise Black Market boxes between seasons, ride seasonal Hot Deals carefully, and accept that you will run one EW season behind spenders who buy each Battle Pass.

EW Investment Order

The investment-order question is "which EWs do I push first?" given a fixed shard pool.

Rule 1: Match Your Primary Squad

Always lead with your primary squad's main carry's EW:

Primary SquadFirst EW Priority
Tank squadKimberly's EW (her squad's carry — also unlocks her Awakening prerequisite for S6)
Aircraft squadDVA's Energy Master (carry + unlocks her Awakening)
Missile squadTesla's Inductive Current (carry + unlocks his Awakening)

Rule 2: Tank/Defensive EW Second

After your DPS carry's EW:

  • Murphy's Mitigation Master is the second-priority EW for almost everyone — enables the Murphy Exception in Aircraft squads, dramatic durability boost
  • Williams's EW if running Tank into long defensive fights
  • Adam's EW if running Missile and you defend a lot

Rule 3: Support EWs Last

Support and utility hero EWs (Schuyler, Marshall, Morrison, Swift, Sarah) are real value but not as kit-defining as carry/tank EWs. Push these only after your carry and tank EWs are at Level 20.

Rule 4: Don't Spread Below Level 20

A common mistake is putting 800 shards into one EW (just past Level 10) and 800 into another. Better: 1,130 into one EW to reach Level 20, then start the next. The Level 10 milestone is real but the Level 20 milestone is dramatically more impactful.

Hero-Specific EW Notes

Murphy: Mitigation Master

  • Enables the Murphy Exception — Murphy can replace Carlie in Aircraft squads at high investment
  • Drops mono-type bonus from 20% to 15%, but Murphy's mitigation more than compensates
  • High value across all three squad compositions when defending or rally-leading
  • Required at Level 20+ if you want to use the Murphy Exception in Season 1+ Aircraft squads

DVA: Energy Master

  • Transforms DVA from "strong burst" to "strongest single-target burst in the game"
  • Adds Vortex Overload — damage booster that stacks when multiple Aircraft heroes are on the team
  • The defining EW of the Aircraft meta from Season 1 onward
  • Required at Level 20+ to Awaken DVA (Week 3 of Season 6)

Tesla: Inductive Current

  • Adds the Inductive stack mechanic to Tesla's energy attacks
  • Scales his AoE damage significantly
  • Pairs with Tesla's existing Electric Grid Lockdown for back-row deletion
  • Required at Level 20+ to Awaken Tesla (Week 6 of Season 6)

Kimberly's EW

  • Adds the Energy Amplification mechanic that her Awakening Skill scales off
  • One of the foundational EWs for any Tank squad
  • Required at Level 20+ to Awaken Kimberly (Week 1 of Season 6)

Other notable EWs

  • Carlie: front-line Aircraft tank, debuff mechanics
  • Lucius: Aircraft defensive support, EW released Week 3 of Season 4
  • Adam: Missile tank with counter-attack scaling
  • Williams: Tank defensive anchor, EW from Season 4
  • Schuyler: Aircraft crowd control, EW from Season 3 Battle Pass
  • Morrison: Aircraft defence-shred support
  • Fiona: Missile AoE DPS, EW from Season 5
  • Stetmann: Tank secondary DPS, EW from Season 5

The full EW roster as of Season 5 is: Kimberly, DVA, Tesla, Murphy, Carlie, Swift, Adam, Lucius, Stetmann, Williams, Schuyler, McGregor, Morrison, Fiona — 14 heroes with EWs, all of which still apply going into Season 6.

What If You Skipped a Season's EW?

If you missed a Battle Pass cycle and don't have one of the seasonal EWs:

  1. Black Market shard boxes between seasons — your fastest free recovery route
  2. Hot Deal pack purchases targeting that hero — when the right pack comes around
  3. Universal EW shards (any source) can be applied to any unlocked weapon at any level — useful for late-game catch-up

You will be at least one season behind Battle Pass buyers, but you will get there eventually.

Common Mistakes

  • Pushing a single EW to Level 30 before others reach Level 20 — diminishing returns vs your second hero's first 20 levels. Spread to Level 20 first
  • Spending shards on support hero EWs before your carry's — your carry hero is the squad's win condition. The support EW is wasted if your carry isn't already at Level 20
  • Forgetting EW Lv20 is the Awakening prerequisite — if you plan to Awaken Kimberly/DVA/Tesla in Season 6, your shard plan must include their EW at Level 20+ first
  • Buying every Battle Pass without focus — a Battle Pass is roughly $20. Buying all three per season is $60 / season. F2P route via Black Market reaches the same destination eventually
  • Saving Universal shards "for the perfect EW" — Universal shards are valuable but they don't appreciate over time. Use them when they're useful, don't hoard them indefinitely
  • Ignoring older-season EWs — heroes from Season 2-4 EWs still matter into Season 6. They are not obsolete. Don't skip past them just because newer EWs exist
