Tech Center Research — What to Level for Your Goal (Damage, Growth, Defense)

Research Priority · 2026-07-14

Level for a Goal, Not a Tree

The Tech Center is the slowest, most permanent progression system in Last War: Survival — research never refunds, and a single node can lock a research queue for days. So the real question isn't "which tree?" but "for what I'm trying to do right now, which node returns the most for the resources and time it costs?"

Our Tech Center Priority tool answers exactly that. Pick a goal and it ranks every research node by bonus per day of research time (and per Valor Badge, or by biggest raw bonus) — pulled directly from the game's own Tech Center data, not estimated. This guide explains the thinking behind each goal so you know why the order comes out the way it does.

What's factual vs recommended here

The bonus values and costs are exact — extracted from the game's research data, where every node stores its attribute and per-level value. What no honest tool can do is turn a research node into an absolute battle-damage number: the damage formula (crit, mitigation) isn't public. So we rank relative value — what to queue next — and leave "how much damage exactly" out of it. Use the Research Calculator for exact remaining costs.

Goal 1 — More Damage

Damage research splits into two kinds, and the difference matters:

  • Flat troop stats (Units tree — Weapon Training). These add attack to every troop tier you own, including the T10 you're chasing. They're cheap, never wasted, and perfect filler between bigger priorities.
  • Percentage hero/squad damage (Masteries, Special Forces, Squad trees). These scale your hero-driven damage. The per-arm Mastery nodes (Tank / Missile / Aircraft — Attack and Damage) only pay off for the troop type you actually field, so commit to your main squad's type and ignore the other two.

In the tool, set the goal to More Damage and the Squad type to your main arm — it hides the two lines you shouldn't touch and ranks the rest by value.

Goal 2 — Survivability

HP, Defense and damage-reduction nodes. The standouts are the ones that reduce all damage taken (Special Forces — Advanced Protection) and the flat Advanced Armor line in Units, which raises HP for every tier. Defensive research is what keeps your front row alive long enough for your back row to win the damage race — essential for base defense and rallies, lower priority for pure "drop the defenders" boss racing.

Goal 3 — Faster Growth

This is the compounding goal, and for most players it should run first and always. Build speed, research speed, training speed and healing speed each make everything else — every building, every future research, every troop batch — complete faster. A percentage of "faster forever" beats a one-off stat bump early on. Keep Development's Fast Builder and Research Enhancement lines topped up and never let a research queue sit idle on them.

Goal 4 — Economy

Resource output, gathering, load and march. Prioritise the Output nodes and the capacity unlocks (More Farmlands / Iron Mines / Gold Mines) over raw gathering speed — production funds your HQ, troops and research, whereas gathering matters less once you're farming resource tiles. Economy research pays the bills for every other goal on this list.

The Order Most Players Should Follow

  1. Always-on Growth (Development) — the multiplier under everything.
  2. Economy output — to fund the rest.
  3. Damage filler — the flat Units stats (Weapon Training / Advanced Armor) in idle slots.
  4. Your squad's Mastery line — one troop type only.
  5. Special Forces climb to Unit X — the T10 gate, chipped away in parallel.

Everything above is available before the Age of Oil (which only opens after Season 2 — there is no oil, and no HQ past 30, in Season 1 or 2). The tool hides Age-of-Oil nodes by default for that reason; tick the box to include them once you're planning past Season 2.

Put It Together

➡️ Open the Tech Center Priority tool, pick your goal, set your Tech Center level to see only what you can research now, and work down the list. Then price the plan in the Research Calculator, and use the Squad Builder — which now shows the top damage research for your squad's troop type — to decide who to field.
