Battle Pass Guide — Free vs Premium Tracks and When to Buy
What Is the Battle Pass?
The Battle Pass is a season-long progression track. Every season offers a Battle Pass with two tiers — Free and Premium — and you earn rewards by completing daily and seasonal tasks that fill a token meter. The Pass lasts the entire season (60-90 days typically), and rewards range from gems and speedups to powerful season-specific items like Awakening Shards.
Free track is always worth running. Premium track value depends on the season. In Hero Awakening seasons (Season 6+), Premium is S-tier value because it includes 70 named Awakening Shards. In non-Awakening seasons, Premium is solid A-tier but not mandatory. Always engage with the Free track regardless.
Free vs Premium Track Structure
Both tracks share the same task list. Completing tasks awards Battle Pass tokens. Tokens fill a tier meter, and each tier you reach unlocks rewards on whichever tracks you have.
You don't need to choose between them. Premium track simply adds rewards on top of the Free track for tiers you reach. Buying Premium late in the season retroactively unlocks the rewards from tiers you already passed.
Token Earning
Tokens come from a daily task list and seasonal milestones. Typical sources:
A reasonably active player can complete the full Battle Pass tier track within a season without rushing. F2P players who play daily typically reach 80-100% of tiers; players who skip days fall short.
Season 6 Awakening Battle Pass
Starting Season 6, the Battle Pass became a primary source of named Awakening Shards for the season's featured hero (Kimberly W1, DVA W3, Tesla W6).
What Awakening Shards Mean in Practice
- Hero Awakening unlock requires 50 named shards
- Premium Battle Pass typically delivers ~70 named shards across the full pass
- That covers the unlock + roughly the first tier toward Star 1
- Without Premium, F2P players rely on Global Expedition + Awakening Trial for the 50 shards — slower path
The 70 named Awakening Shards alone are worth more than the rest of the Battle Pass combined. If you intend to Awaken the season's featured hero, Premium pays for itself many times over. If you don't intend to Awaken (or already have the shards from elsewhere), Premium drops to A-tier — still good, not transformative.
The Three S6 Awakening Battle Passes
Season 6 actually has three sequential Awakening Battle Passes — one for each hero:
Buy the Battle Pass for the hero matching your primary squad. A Tank player buys Kimberly's BP. An Aircraft player buys DVA's. Buying all three is whale-tier and rarely necessary.
Pre-Season 6 Battle Passes
In Pre-Season 1 through Season 5, the Battle Pass focused on Exclusive Weapon shards and seasonal currency.
Pre-Awakening BP Value Drivers
A good rule: Premium Battle Pass is worth it whenever the season's featured progression matches your squad investment.
When to Buy Premium
Decision framework based on the season:
Activity Threshold
Premium is only worth it if you can reach the majority of tiers. A rough heuristic:
- Daily login + daily quests: ~70-80% of tiers reachable. Premium pays off
- Weekly login only: ~30-40% of tiers. Premium probably not worth it
- Heavy daily play + event participation: 100% of tiers reachable. Premium delivers full value
Buying Premium Late in the Season
You can buy Premium Battle Pass at any point during the season and retroactively unlock all rewards from tiers you already cleared. This means:
- Mid-season Premium purchases are valid — no point penalty for buying late
- Wait if uncertain — buy at week 4-5 once you know whether you'll engage enough
- End-of-season buying is rare but works — you immediately collect the full backfill
The trade-off: buying late means you don't benefit from the token earning boost for the early weeks.
Common Battle Pass Mistakes
- Skipping daily quests — token earning depends on daily activity. Skipped days = skipped tiers
- Buying Premium for a hero you don't use — Awakening Shards are hero-specific, no value if you don't Awaken
- Buying all three S6 Awakening BPs as F2P — overspend; one matched to your squad is enough
- Not buying Premium during a perfect-fit Awakening week — leaves the highest-value pack on the table
- Buying Premium too late to reach high tiers — buying in week 7 of an 8-week season caps your tier reach
- Forgetting that Premium retroactively unlocks — if you've already cleared tier 30, Premium will deliver tier 1-30 rewards instantly
- Comparing Premium price to gem packs — Battle Pass is closer to a subscription than a pack. Different value math
- Letting tokens cap — claim rewards as you earn them; some seasons have token caps
- Skipping the Free track because you didn't buy Premium — Free is always worth running
- Not coordinating with seasonal Hot Deal cycles — sometimes BP is bundled with other items at a discount
